Tips

These are some very good things to note about your bicycle and it's maintenance!

Lubricant Advice:

  • First and foremost, WD-40 DOES NOT WORK as chain lubricant.
  • If your chain is stuck and rusty, WD-40 will get it working but dry up very fast. This leads to your chain rusting faster as its bare.
  • You need a Chain Lubricant afterwards to ensure the chain can function properly and has the intended life span.
  • Always let most, if not all of the WD-40 dry before applying chain lubricant, the WD-40 will remove the lubricant.
  • WD-40 and similar products will release any old part with enough "elbow grease", you can then lubricate with the same lubricant for the chain. A Teflon lubricant works best.
  • Make sure to lubricate as many moving joins as you can.
  • Consult owners manual for what needs different attention or special lubricants.

    Quick-release Tips:

    • Note down your cycles seat post height in case someone takes if off your bicycle when its locked up (We have had quite a few clients over the years have this happen to them)
    • The best way to avoid this is to remove it from the cycle or try threading the lock around the seat as well (under the mount) if this is not possible
    • Always make sure to note what parts are quick release and have them either removed to locked to the frame when storing the bike
    • Be sure to check near the safety line on your current post for size. It will say something like 27.2 near a line that says "insert line" or something of the sort.

    Tools of the Trade!

    • a 10mm wrench and a 5mm Allen key are your best friends with most modern bicycles. The brakes (so long as they are Cable Brakes) will most often use 1 of these 2 tools.
    • A good cleaning kit can go a long way! Most everyday issues with bicycles come down to dirt.

    Additional Tips:

    • Always write down your bicycle's V.I.N. Every bicycle, no matter the value, has one.
